I will show you how to sew a baby sleeping bag that will make your life easier and help keep your little one cozy and happy.
This new blog post is for you. Learn how to sew a sleeping bag that will keep your baby warm all through the night.
Did you know that the first three months of a baby’s life are the most dangerous? The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parents have their infants sleep in proximity to them for those first few months.

Unfortunately, this is not always possible as many parents work and need to sleep separately from their babies. In case of an emergency, they may also be unable to reach their child quickly enough.
A sleeping bag can give your infant a sense of comfort and security when you cannot hold them all night long.
If you have been looking for a way to help your little one fall asleep faster or want some peace of mind while they slumber, then making a sleeping bag for your baby might be what you need!
How to Sew a Baby Sleeping Bag?
Travelers often overlook baby essentials when packing for their trip. However, if you are traveling with a baby, it is important to ensure that they are prepared for any climate with the right clothing and gear.
A sleeping bag is an essential item for babies who need to sleep in different temperatures while away from home. To sew your own Baby Sleeping Bag, follow these easy steps:
Materials you will need to sew a baby sleeping bag
Let’s start to make sewing your baby sleeping bag.
First Step: Cutting out the fabric
Place your pattern piece (pattern included at the end of this article) on top of your fabric and cut around it, leaving 1/2 inch seam allowance. You will notice that I doubled over my fabrics for each layer to make sure my finished product is super warm.
I used four different fabrics to make my baby sleeping bag, so I cut out four pieces of fabric per layer. You can also use two different fabrics or use a lining for one of the layers. It’s up to you!
Second Step: Sewing your Baby Sleeping Bag Layers
Place your first piece of fabric face up on your work surface. Place the second piece of fabric right side down so that they are overlapping by two inches. Pin them together all along the edges, 1/2 inch from the edge, leaving enough room to sew across the top.
Sew along the pinned edge using a straight stitch and press the seam open once you are done. Repeat this step with all four layers of fabric.
Last Step: Sewing the Sleeping Bag Together
Place the top layer on your work surface, right side up. Place one side piece (the bottom layer) face down on top of it, lining up the edges. Pin them together along one edge, 1/2 inch from the edge. Please repeat this step with the other side piece and place it on top of two layers, lining up the edges.
Instructions for how to make a baby sleeping bag
Sew each pinned edge together using a straight stitch, and press seams open once you are done. You can now turn your sleeping bag right side out through one of the openings at the bottom layer. Press flat all around the edges, making sure to get rid of any wrinkles.
Carefully push each corner out with a point turner or chopstick. Press again all around the edge, making sure side seams are lined up evenly. Fold in top seams of your sleeping bag about 1/4 inch and press using a hot iron to hold the folds in place.
Zip up your bag and check that the zipper is working properly. Sew across the top of your bag between each layer for added security. You can now fill it with polyester filling wrapped in a fabric square to hold it in place or use an old comforter or blanket as filler.
You are now ready to give your baby a sense of security and warmth when you cannot keep them in your arms. Here’s a video tutorial to help you sew a baby sleeping bag:

Sewing your own baby sleeping bag is definitely worth the time and effort. Please choose natural fabrics and will more than likely last for years since it is so well made.
This is one of those projects that are nice to have up your sleeve, especially if you struggle with being away from your baby or getting them to sleep at night because they feel insecure without them being in your arms.
Why Should You Sew a Sleeping Bag for Your Baby?
An infant sleeping bag is a perfect way to keep your baby warm and comfortable at home or outdoors.
The right sleeping cover will provide just the right amount of warmth while still allowing your little one to move around freely.
How Much Time Does It Take?
If you have basic sewing skills, then this type of project won’t take you very long. It takes most of the time to make small adjustments and fix any missteps, so if anything, it will probably be a bit longer than expected.
However, looking at the bigger picture, these little sleeping bags can save you money in the long run since they are reusable and keep your baby warm every night!
Which Material Do You Need?
When choosing the best material for your baby’s sleeping bag, it’s important to remember that they are usually worn outdoors. This means you will want a fabric that is durable and weather resistant.
Cotton is the most common choice since it is breathable and comfortable against the skin. A cotton/polyester blend or fleece is another good option.
When To Sew A Baby Sleeping Bag?
Sewing a baby sleeping bag is a great project to work on while you are pregnant so that you can get it done before the baby arrives.
This way, you will have one ready to go, and your child will feel safe and secure in their new sleeping bag!
You should also consider sewing a toddler sleeping bag if your child has outgrown their baby one, so they feel safe through the transition.
How Much Does It Cost To Make One?
In general, it is cheaper to make a baby sleeping bag yourself. Most of the supplies needed are inexpensive, and you have more options with fabric and design than if you were to purchase one at a store.
If you make your own 2-sided fleece blankets for babies, then you will be able to reuse them as they grow – saving you even more money in the long run!
Are There Any Downsides Of Making Your Own Baby Sleeping Bag?
There are several benefits to making your own baby sleeping bag, but there is only one downside.
Making a baby sleeping bag takes longer than buying one at a store or online, so it’s best to start this project ahead of time, so you don’t have to wait until your child is lying on the floor with a blanket around their shoulders to finish it.
How To Use The Sleeping Bag Safely?
Before using the sleeping bag, it’s important to be aware of specific safety guidelines for babies. Any blanket can pose a suffocation risk, so make sure you always check on your baby while they are sleeping!
This will ensure that there isn’t anything covering their nose or mouth. You should also avoid putting any toys or stuffed animals in the sleeping bag with your child.
Are Sleeping Bags Good For Babies?
Sleeping bags are a great alternative to traditional baby blankets since they keep your little one warm and snug but don’t cover their face.
If you choose a 2-sided fleece blanket for babies during the day when it’s warmer outdoors, then you can pull it down when it’s bedtime!
This will help your baby feel safe and secure as they drift off to sleep.
What Is The Best Sleeping Bag For Babies?
The best sleeping bags are usually made from cotton or fleece, are lightweight but still warm, and have breathable mesh for safety.
If you decide to make your own, you will also be able to choose the fabric that suits you best!
What Age Can Baby Use Sleeping Bag?
You can use a sleeping bag for babies as soon as they start to roll over on their own or sit up by themselves.
This will usually be around 3-6 months old, but it’s important to check with your pediatrician before you start using one if your baby isn’t crawling yet.
Why Are Baby Sleeping Bags Sleeveless?
When your baby is wearing a sleeping bag, their arms won’t need to be covered in the early stages.
Once they grow older and start moving a lot, you might want to add sleeves to keep them warm between their pajamas and coat/blanket.
You can also choose a full-body sleeping bag with sleeves for even more warmth.
The Bottom Line
The sewing is easy, and the process can be done in less than an hour. These sleeping bags are a must-have for babies when they cannot keep themselves warm enough during the winter months.
You’ll find that this project will give you plenty of ideas on how to sew other baby projects such as clothing, hats, bibs, blankets, and more! We hope you enjoy it.
